With the release of Leopard, Apple added a great human sounding voice to Mac OS X, Alex. Alex was so much better than every other voice that had ever been on the Mac that it became the only voice I ever used, for years. I use the voice to read back text and, with some Automation, read Instapaper articles to me on my drive.
As great as Alex sounds, I’m really tired of his voice. Lion fixes this. There are several high quality voices for Mac OS X Lion, but you have to go fetch them.
Start out in system preferences and click Speech.
- These are powerful and can be used for both offensive and defensive actions. Once you pick one up be sure to use it quickly — you can only hold one at a time and it will drop if you're knocked out. Besides a basic attack, all knights also have a charged melee and a unique projectile that can be fired in any direction.
- Find games for macOS that last days or more like Six Match, Rise to Ruins, Mountain 2.0, Lurking I: Immortui, Passion High (Demo) on itch.io, the indie game hosting marketplace.
Find games for macOS like Friday Night Funkin', Cold Shot, Wrong Floor, Deepest Sword, Dying of Thirst on itch.io, the indie game hosting marketplace.
Next, tap the selection arrows next to Alex.
Lion just displays a few voices. The trick is clicking the customize button.
That opens the motherlode. There are a lot of voices to choose from. Scroll through the list and pick your favorites. There is a Play button to preview. The selected voices get downloaded through software update. Be warned, the files are big.
My new favorite is Fiona with her Scottish accent. Super cardboard box raiser mac os. (Aren’t all Americans secret anglophiles?) I haven’t updated my automator script yet but must admit I’m really looking forward to listening to Fiona read John Siracusa’s Lion review. My only regret is that they didn’t use the dulcet tones of my friend from Liverpool. So Alex, thank you for your loyal service. Now hit the bricks.

Verifying the app
Recent versions of Mac OS X have built-in code signature verification mechanismsenabled by default that will prevent opening unsigned apps (also known asGatekeeper).
While this provides little security (any one can buy a $99/year individual developercertificate), it does allow you to verify that the app you just downloaded was, indeed, built and distributed by us (itch.io).
All our OSX binaries are signed by a Developer ID certificate to the name of Amos Wenger, and you can verify them by running the following command in a terminal:
You're Fired (itch) Mac Os Download
..where
/Applications/itch.app
is the full path to the .app. If the app is correctlysigned, you should see the following terminal output:Updating
You're Fired (itch) Mac Os X
The app is self-updating on OSX, just like on Windows. Refer to the Windows page for details.
Uninstalling
You can uninstall the app by dragging
itch.app
out of your /Applications
folder and into the Trash. You're Fired (itch) Mac Os Version
Note that this won't remove your library, which resides at
~/Library/Application Support/itch
,along with any additional install locations you have added from the app.
